We often envision stillness as what happens when the wind and waves cease around us. The water is calm, the noise is gone, and an environment of serenity is all that remains. While that is the definition of stillness in the modern dictionary, there are times when we must dig deeper.
According to Strong’s Concordance, the root word here is Hebrew (raphah). And in this particular verse, it is meant as an invitation to quiet one’s heart by letting go of striving and acknowledging God is sovereign. This is a quieting on the inside, and a cultivation of Holy stillness (Strong’s, 7503).
Through a simple yet profound command, we see that spiritual stillness isn’t the absence of noise or conflict around us.
This verse doesn’t say, “be still because everything is going well right now…”. Rather, it is our intentional choice to drop whatever we have exalted above Him, stop striving, and know that God…the Great I AM… will be exalted in this battle.
When we choose (raphah) as an act of faith rather than fighting in our own strength, we know that everything around us does not need to be still for our hearts to be still.
We are proactively surrendering our will to His, the battle to Him, and in doing so, the victory is assured.
Reactive
And yet, when life feels unsteady, loud, or overwhelming, our immediate reaction is often an attempt to control the situation, to double down, or to fight harder. We think that if we don’t do these things, we’re giving up. Or maybe we’ve decided that being distracted is easier than being in the battle at all.
In either of these scenarios, we have chosen to do something other than what this verse instructs us to do. This is a perfect recipe for burnout and discouragement. And we’ve all done it.
God has something better for us, a plan to be proactive in battle. A plan for rest that gives us strength, and peace that surpasses all understanding.
Radically Different
Thank God that He shows us how the reverse is true; God knows that when we allow Him to fight for us, the areas where we feel depleted are being restored.
He not only gives permission, but instructs us to let go, relax, release our grip, and stop striving. Sometimes our logical minds struggle with the ease with which God operates. This is when we can remind ourselves that His ways are always higher than our ways.
Now, this is a deliberate choice we must make, one that requires abiding with Christ in rest, as opposed to a habitual fight, till you get it right, reaction that depletes our energy reserves. What He offers us is radically different than what the world offers.
The Opposition
We acknowledge that the enemy wants us frantic, anxious, reactive, or in avoidance. His goal is to send fiery darts of doubt, fear, old thought patterns, and accusations. And perhaps old behavioral patterns have us focusing on the fight in the physical environment or the people around us.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12 KJV)
This battle isn’t against flesh and blood; our physical or mental strength and striving won’t win it.
Stillness (raphah) is actually an act of spiritual warfare, signaling to the enemy that your trust is anchored in God, not your own strength, and that you trust Him enough to rest in the battle.
Knowing
When we spend time with Jesus and listen to the Holy Spirit daily, though our eyes see chaos, delays, or opposition, He shows us His promises and offers us His Peace.
We can only be still (raphah) when we know who He is. He is the Creator of the universe, the Author and Finisher of our faith, the Alpha and Omega, and He will be exalted regardless of our surrounding circumstances.
We are also reminded in Galatians 5:1 (KJV) to stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Let us choose to be still (raphah), standing fast in this freedom today.
An Invitation
You are invited right now, in this moment, to take a deep breath and drop any weapons formed of your own design, and release whatever you are clinging to that is based in striving.
Ask God: What am I holding onto today that You are asking me to “raphah” to loosen my grip, and trust You with?
Closing Devotional Prayer:
My prayer for you:
Heavenly Father, we praise you, for you are mighty to save, and mighty in battle. We ask that you show us where we are striving or fighting with our own strength, and forgive us. Show us where you’ve asked us to raphah, and be still, knowing that you are God. Heal the parts of us that need to grow in trust, and bring us into a deeper understanding of who you are, and who you want to be for us right now. We know we wrestle not against flesh and blood; reveal to us your divine strategy of rest and place your hedge of protection around our families this week as we go about your business. We ask all of these things in the Mighty name of Jesus, Amen!
