Today’s Devotional Scripture: 6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7 And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. - Genesis 16:6-12 KJV

We see here in Scripture where Hagar is in the wilderness. She has fled the hand of Sarai after discovering that she is pregnant. Sarai, in an attempt to circumnavigate the timing of God, decided to give Hagar to Abraham, her husband. A child is conceived, and the quarreling begins between Sarai and Hagar.
Hagar begins to hate Sarai, and Sarai deals harshly with her so Hagar runs away. While she's running away, attempting to go somewhere, anywhere, the Lord finds her in the middle of the wilderness. Out in the middle of nowhere, in one of the worst times of Hagar's life, the Lord sees her. The Lord finds her.
The angel of the Lord had a specific assignment, to go where Hagar was, and to bless her. So the angel of the Lord tells her to go back to where she was running from, to submit back under the hand of Sarai, and in doing so, he then blesses her. He says, I will make thy seed exceedingly great. They shall not be numbered. To a woman in this time, to carry forth much fruit, to have a lineage with multiple, multiple seed that cannot be numbered, was a blessing.
The angel of the Lord finds Hagar in the bottom of her life, pregnant with her master's baby, and says to her, I'm going to bless you. Go back. I know it's hard. I know it's frustrating. I know you didn't plan to be pregnant, but go back. We see here that there is nothing that keeps you from God. There is nothing that can separate you from the love of God.
In this case, the handmaid of Sarai was simply following orders. But in doing so, she became a blessed woman in the midst of what was a very messy situation. The Lord not only saw her, but blessed her and gave her the name of her son, Ishmael. For the Lord has heard thy affliction. So Ishmael was not named for anything that Ishmael did.
Ishmael was named because his mother was seen by God. His mother was met by the Lord in the wilderness, and the Lord wanted to remind her all the days of her life that He heard her cry. He heard her distress, and that he would not abandon her. After all is said and done, after all of life's messy situations, remember that God's love remains.
Through all of the circumstances, the love of God is undeniable. The love of God cannot be stopped, not by distance and not by messiness of the situation.
The love of God remains. It prevails. It presses. It covers. It heals. It blesses. God's love remains in all of life's situations. His love is preeminent. His love is what sent Jesus. His love has reconciled us back to himself. His love is undeniable.
The love of God remains, no matter how messy a situation may feel, no matter how isolated it may seem, no matter how difficult the times you are in. The Lord is able to find you right where you are, and He sees you. She names the place at that moment. She names the place. And the place that is named, the way that Moses did, and the way that Abraham did, and the way that David did, Hagar names the place.
She named the place Beerlehairoi. And she explains that she has seen the God who looks after her. “The God who sees me” is what she named it. So she gave the place a name. The God who sees me, for she saw God. This was not just a blessing from the angel of the Lord. It was an honor for the woman of God to be seen by God and to speak to the angel of the Lord.
Remember, all through Scripture, God didn't typically speak to the women. He spoke to Abraham. He spoke to Moses. But here we see where the angel of the Lord is sent on assignment for Hagar's sake. This is the power of the love of God. When all else seems to fail, God's love remains and he is the God that sees you no matter where you are, no matter what you're going through.
He is the God that sees you. He is the God that loves you and He is the God that will bless you in the midst of the mess. He is God alone. Beyond anyone's judgment, He is God alone. Beyond anyone's mechanisms, beyond the manipulation, beyond your hurt and your pain, He is God.
So she names the well Beerlehairoi and in naming that well, sets the precedent that God doesn't just go after those who look good or fit the part. But, He goes after those who are in messy situations, who feel lost, alone, and afraid. He is God and His love remains.
