**Sip Saturday is written by our Saturday morning contributor, - A beautifully gifted Christian author who seeks to honor the Trinity in her writing. She hopes that her words will encourage women to draw closer to God, whether that is through her fantasy series or her weekly devotionals.
Cornerstone Scripture:
"…like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed.
But you are the same,
and your years will have no end.”
-Hebrews 1:12 ESV
"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey... stuff."-Doctor Who
The British sci-fi show, Doctor Who, follows the story of the mysterious and alien "Doctor," as he travels in a blue police box through all of time and space, solving mysteries, fighting crime, and stopping aliens from crash-landing on Earth (again). Purely fictional, this show vacillates from being wacky to serious, resulting in a convoluted narrative that even the most diehard fans have a hard time figuring out. Even the doctor himself declares that time itself is so convoluted, even he, the supposed lord of time and space, cannot adequately describe it.
As Christians, we, too, are often unable to describe time. We know that time progresses, and that (so far as we can tell), there are no alternate universes or time machines. As a result, time seems to be linear and unalterable. However, we find ourselves befuddled when we come upon passages like this one, which indicate the eternal-ness of God. God is the same, despite the progression of time. Even when Jesus died, he came back to life. Death cannot hold him. Time cannot stop him. As Scripture tells us:
"But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."-2 Peter 3:8 ESV
God is outside of time and space. He is the true lord of it, the Father of Time. He is not constrained by time, but brought it into being. He is eternal. He has always been here and always will be here. And we, his frail human creatures, are also eternal beings. Yes, our physical bodies may die, but our souls will continue to live on. Then, depending on whether we are saved or not, we will either be gifted new, eternal bodies, that do not die, or be sent into everlasting torment (Revelation 20).
When we consider these facts about God–that he is outside of time and space, that He has always been here–our minds may become "wibbly-wobbly" and "timey-wimey." But that's alright. I don't know about you, but I'm glad I'm not in charge of time. It is too vast and too confusing, and I would much rather surrender to the Lord that ability.
Let's pray.
Dear Lord, let us not be filled with anxiety or worry when certain things don't happen according to our schedule. Instead, let us trust you to manage our time, and manage it far better than we can. To you, we surrender our time. Amen.
