Open Devotional: You Have All That You Need To Break Free
Comprehensive Devotional Open To All Members
In this season, it’s easy to look back and wonder about the memories. All that was lost. All the opportunities you missed. All of the relationships that are not going forward into the new year.
You may be wondering if you made mistakes. You may be wondering how much you could have changed. But like the woman leaving Sodom and Gomorrah, there is nothing for you back there. Everything that you hold dear and the family that you have with you right now is what matters.
As you read this devotional, consider all of the good. Look at the silver lining. Look for God in this moment. Look for him in all of the situations that just didn’t pan out the way that you desired. There is a blessing in every one of those situations. There is joy here.
But if you focus on what you lost, it will be easy to miss the blessing. It’s easy to overlook the small things. In 1 Kings Ch. 19, we find the victorious man of God, Elijah, is looking back. He is frustrated. He laments that the enemy came for him and despairs because Jezebel threatened his life and his alone. He says as much to God when questioned about why he is in the cave.
You see, it’s easy to feel singled out when situations turn against you and when it seems like after great breakthroughs, you experience heavy losses and setbacks. It’s easy to feel isolated and alone.
God responds and says that Elijah was not the only one who stood up against Jezebel. But the focus of this devotional is what happens right after this conversation. God tells Elijah to go forth and stand up on the mount before the Lord. (1 Kings 19:11-12)
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
What follows is a demonstration of God’s power. The strong winds, the earthquake, and the fire were an indication that God passed by. But the still small voice which held the will of God spoke to Elijah.
Despite the demonstration of the power of God, Elijah continued in answered in the same manner as before. It was as if he could not see all of the shaking and stirring was essentially the power of God in the situation. He focused again on what was negative and on how he felt. His emotions were focused on the negative and on the losses.
Despite the apparent shaking, stirring, and the losses that you have experienced, take the time to look for the still small voice. What was God speaking in those difficult moments? What beautiful blessings remain?
Have the courage to release every old thing and leave the ashes in the past. Your future doesn’t need distractions.
