Today’s Devotional Scripture: 16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. - Ruth 1:16-17 KJV

We often hear of the story of Ruth as a love story. The truth of the matter is, Ruth didn’t know what was going to happen next. She was in a deep moment of uncertainty. She wasn’t quite certain if she could go home with her sister Orpah, or if she should go forward with her mother-in-law Naomi.

Now that she was a widow and had no children, Ruth was essentially at the end of her life. The husband she thought she would have was gone. The child that she may have desired was not had. So no children, no husband.

She and her sister were in the same situation, as her brother-in-law was her husband’s brother, and Orpah also had no children. In the land of Moab, there was a famine, and in the midst of the famine, Naomi’s husband and her two sons, the husbands of Orpah and Ruth, were killed.

At this point, there’s a famine, there’s no provision, and there are no husbands to care for them. These women are all three at the end of something.

And it is here that Naomi decides to go back to Bethlehem, and she goes back in the midst of the barley harvest. She encourages her daughters to leave, to go and find husbands that can bear them children, as Naomi was aware that she was old in age and could not bear new sons.

This entire story is one where we see that logic is one choice. Logic looks at the end of everything. Logic says it’s time to turn back. We gave it a good try. It’s time to let go.

This is logic.

But faith operates differently. And here in the book of Ruth, verses 16 through 17 show us exactly what faith in action looks like: knowing that there is nothing for you to go back to, and not knowing where you’re going, simply making a commitment.
