This one verse of scripture is from a passage of scripture called the Beatitudes. In this scripture, we see that the Lord, in Matthew 5:1, sees that he is surrounded, so he decides to go up. Matthew 5:1 in the King James Version reads:
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. - Matthew 5:1-11 KJV
The whole passage of scripture is being provided because, contextually, we see the juxtaposition between the poor in spirit and receiving the kingdom of heaven. We see that those who hunger and thirst will be filled. We see the peacemakers, and they are being called the children of God.
We see the juxtapositions between what the world sees and what the Lord sees. We see how God is teaching in a high place. He’s teaching not to the multitudes. He’s teaching to the few; to the disciples who are willing to climb with Him. So in this scripture, Jesus has already set the scene that this lesson is for those who are willing to go higher. This lesson is not for those who are willing to stay at the bottom of that mountain.
He climbed, and the disciples went with him. Now we know from previous devotionals that the high places, the mountains, this is where we war, right? The mountains are where we go up in order to receive from the Lord. We saw it with Moses and getting the 10 commandments. You saw in scripture where in Numbers 23, a king attempts to hire a seer to curse the children of Israel at the top of a mountain.
