Today’s Devotional Scripture: 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
- Acts 4:31-33 KJV

Here we see the believers gathered together. We see them praying, and what they’re praying for is they’re praying for boldness. They’re praying for God to empower them to go forth and preach the gospel. They’re praying for God to go forth and empower their hand for miracles, signs, and wonders, and to empower them to preach boldly of the resurrection of the Lord.

The reason why they are praying here in Acts 4:31-33 is because in Acts 3, two of them healed a man in the city square. They healed a man lame from birth at the temple gate called Beautiful. And when they healed him, they said they did it in the name of Jesus Christ. That it was in the name of him who was crucified and was risen from the dead that the miracle happened.

So they performed a public miracle and then said, we did this in the name of Jesus, the one who rose from the dead and was crucified. So immediately, there was much talk. There was much opposition that arose because of that. The priest, the Sadducees, and the temple leaders were absolutely disturbed because he was preaching about the dead rising in Jesus. So they were brought before the Jewish ruling council.

As they were brought before the Jewish ruling council, the response from Peter, once question was that:

12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. - Acts 4:12 KJV

So they are immediately taken before leadership, they are taken before Jewish rulers, and they are challenged to not speak of this any longer, to not preach any longer, to not teach in the name of Jesus. So what do they do after being threatened?

They began to pray.

In Acts 4:28, they start to pray, and they pray for the Lord to empower them. They pray for God to cover their hands. They pray for God to extend to them the grace to perform miracles, signs, and wonders. More boldness, more power, and the Lord responds. So the ground shaking that we see in Acts 4:31 is the response of the Lord.
