God is so faithful. In this scripture, we see that in the midst of the Israelites coming out of hundreds of years of slavery and walking through the wilderness to get to the promised land, that God tells them that he will be with them. Not just in spirit, but he says that he will send an angel before them to keep them in the way, to bring them into a place that he prepared. This may be a season of transition and growth where you’re fully stepping into something different.
You’re stepping into a new season. Maybe you’re moving. Maybe you’re going into a new relationship or you’re coming out of one. This may be a heavy transition into something different, out of a job, into a career, out of a career, into a business. God may be elevating and growing you in incredible ways, and the road looks scary. You’re not quite certain where it goes, but you feel the pull that it’s time to leave. It’s time to go.
That still small voice inside of you is speaking and saying it’s time to break out. It’s time to move. Often, when we don’t have all the information and we don’t know exactly where it’s going to end, it can be pretty scary. It can be difficult to truly trust God. In this case, we see a powerful example of how the Lord showed the Israelites that He was with them, that he was going to send an angel to be that guiding light.
We see it all throughout scripture where the Lord says that he will be with you, that he goes before you. There is nothing that can stop God from being with you. He’s faithful. He will never leave you nor forsake you. However, what if you knew in your heart and in your mind as you rose in the morning and prepared your children for school and prepared yourself for work, that through it all, God was right there guiding you?
What if that was our default instead of going into prayer and asking God to show us certain things and we’re praying for revelation, we’re praying for a breakthrough for our spouses and for our children and for our families. But what if you knew in your heart and you received by faith that God was already going before you? That as you wake up in the morning and started to look at your day, that God was already paving the way for you, breaking down walls and guiding you into the secret place day by day?
We see that testament in Deuteronomy 31:8, “The Lord himself goes before you. He will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged”. We see that in Deuteronomy 31:8. We see all of these powerful scriptures that show us who God is. They show us his faithfulness. They show us. We see the same in Deuteronomy 1:30, “The Lord your God who goes before you”. We see it in Isaiah 52:12: “The Lord will go before you and the God of Israel will be your rear guard”.
These scriptures are reminders that He is faithful. He is a promise keeper, and he does indeed go before us. So this is not just a promise He gave to the Israelites coming out of hundreds of years of slavery and going into the promise, which we know as Canaan. That is minimizing the power of God to only work within the past or within our limited understanding of scripture or within our finite belief system: That what was is what was, and what is coming is unknown. That is not true.
This shows a pattern that God has demonstrated time and time again that he will make your crooked ways straight. The faithfulness that God shows throughout scripture and throughout the word is so powerful. He is a guiding light to show us the pathway, and we don’t always get it right, and we don’t always know which way we’re going, but he is faithful nevertheless to go before us, to be our God in life, to be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.
When we read this in the King James Version, it says in Psalm 119:105:
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.- Psalm 119:105 KJV
This shows us that God is right there with us all of the time. He’s available at any given moment, no matter how far we feel like we’ve gone off the beaten path, no matter how deep we think we are in a difficult situation. The Lord says, I am right here. He tells us in scripture that he is faithful, committed, never leaving, never forsaking. He shows us through his word that he’s faithful.
He is now showing us through this cornerstone scripture that he will send the answers before us: angels, His Spirit, and revelation that goes beyond anything that we can understand because we received it by faith. Because we trust in HIm. And so we see in Hebrews 11 that the elders received faith by the good report. So in Hebrews 11:1-2, it says:
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
For by it the elders obtained a good report. - Hebrews 11:1-2 KJV
When you continue to read through Hebrews 11 in your own time, you begin to see the power of God at work through all of scripture. You begin to see that faith is not just a one-time thing. It’s not just the “I’ll make it to school” kind of thing, or “Thank you, God, for driving with me” kind of thing. And those things are so blessed, and we’re so grateful for God walking with us through our everyday lives. But we see the good report as well.
The thing that seems impossible, the thing that seems unlikely, and through verse after verse, you can see it. Testimony after testimony, all the way from Abel in the beginning of the word, through all of the scriptures and the verses of scripture. You can see Hebrews 11 becomes that cornerstone of evidence that God is with us, that he is faithful, that he goes before us, and that by faith, we can receive the good report of the Lord.
The impossible situation and the unlikely circumstance, knowing what reality looks like, we can still receive that He goes before us. We can still receive that He is God. As you rise today and conquer this day with God right there with you in the midst, remember that you can call on him at any time. He’s right there with you, and that He is the God that goes before you.
Closing Devotional Prayer
My prayer for you: Father, in the name of Jesus, thank you. Thank you that your mercies are new every morning. Thank you for the weighted glory of God. Thank you, God, that you are Alpha and Omega at the beginning and the end. I give you glory, oh God, for your blessed grace this morning. I thank you God that the mighty woman of God is walking with you, that she realizes, oh God, that you are empowering her to finish.
If she can just put her hands to the plow and not look back, oh God, the glory that she will see revealed through her life will touch every person in her household if she can just trust you. I thank you, Lord, that today we receive by faith that you are the God that goes before us, oh God, that you are the God that does not leave us. You don’t forsake us, oh God.
You keep us in all of our ways if we acknowledge you. So God, we’re acknowledging you now. We’re thanking you, God, for this morning. I thank you for the paid members of the Daily Devotional for Women community, and I thank you for those who are free who just come in and listen to the prayers every morning.
