I saw this post and knew IMMEDIATELY that is would be the first Freedom Friday. The world is hellbent on pulling down powerful women. Whether it’s Kelly Roland walking off the set due to an unacceptable dressing room or Taylor Swift being blamed for ruining football, the world never stops finding reasons to tear women down and put them in their proverbial place.
We are judged on our desires, our goals and dreams, our post-baby snapback, our weight, the way we dress, how we speak…. The laundry list of things we are expected to master and simply know is astounding. So what does a smart, level-headed woman who doesn’t want to look like a b*tch do?
She plays the part.
She remembers to show grace.
She smiles in the face of disappointment.
She bows when she wants to scream.
She releases and makes the practice of letting go seem so easy.
The art of enduring disrespect and being the most loved person in the room becomes the tight-rope that we walk. Day in and day out.
We master the art of making femininity and womanhood look good.
We flex the education. We flex mastering being a single mom. We flex the successful businesses. We flex the growth in our ministries. We flex and we flex.
When someone forgets - We flex again just so they don’t act like they don’t know the truth: We are amazing.
We have overcome and broken through so many barriers. Despite the not-so-subtle attacks on the sovereignty of women’s safety and choices (good or bad), we are continue to wage a never ending-war against what is.
The systems. The patriarchal micro-aggressions in and out of the church. The control issues. The medical industrial complex. The war mongering and hatred evident in every corner of our society.
We are standing and flowing through the obstacles again and again.
It’s no wonder we flex our accomplishments. We hide in our mistakes and our shame.
We mask who we really are again and again as every woman knows: you don’t want to offend one side or another. So you adapt and remain flexible through all that attacks your right to simply “be”.
The first step in being truly free is recognizing that you have the power to regain your sovereignty and take back control of your life.
Will everyone be happy with it? Absolutely not.
As it is with anything of value that is done in the world - someone will be offended. Someone will attempt to “should” you into submission based on their view of you.
You should be thankful for what you have.
You should take care of your priorities.
You should remember that you’re not young anymore.
You should go back and try that again.
You should stop being ungrateful.
You should have done this…
The world is a never-ending litany of judgements for how you should live your life based on people’s limited perception of what you are worth. Maybe it’s time to start explaining to people that you aren’t alone. There is an all-knowing, all powerful source of intuitive guidance lighting your path.
You’re not some lost damsel in need of people’s high-and-mighty oversight of your life. No one know’s the heaviness of your walk. No one knows how much your experience has cost you. No one can see the impact of your decisions beyond the current moment and absolutely NO ONE has the power to block the favor of God over your life.
Let go of the past and start to relax inside this moment. This moment is the only one you can fully control. It’t the only thing you have power over. Yourself, your emotions, and your present. Everything else is what it was or what it will be. You can’t change the past and you can’t guarantee the future.
The most powerful thing you can do is flex in the favor of now.
