We all have this walk to bear, that we would get to know God intimately, that we would go from simply believing in God and knowing that He exists to being in intimate fellowship with God, that we would know God and that He would know us. For many have delivered people in His name, many have cast out demons, many have done great works, but in the end He will say, “Depart from me, ye workers of iniquity, for I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:21-23 KJV)
To know God is to be in intimate fellowship with Him, prayer, fasting, and praise, to worship God because He is. Many confuse knowing someone with knowing of someone. Especially in this day and age, in the age of social media, we will see someone and we’ll believe that we know them because they’re highly visible. Because they’re open with their gifts, their talent, their assignment in God.
We will see them work, and because of the continuous exposure, because of our love of their talent, their skill, and the apparent openness of this individual, there is something that develops called parasocial relationships. This just means that this person is making a friend out of someone that they may or may not have ever met, that they may not know intimately.
But it’s a means of connection. It’s by this that we connect in this day and age and that we reach out across the gap to know, to love, to honor our favorite musicians, artists, creators, the believers in Jesus Christ that we love listening to, that we pray with, that we listen to their devotionals, we listen to their Scriptures, we listen to their sermons, we go to their churches, either online or in person.
These relationships are not real. We know of this person, but we don’t know them. This is the difference between knowing that God exists, knowing that He’s the God who created the universe and everything in it, and knowing this for yourself intimately: that God is with you, that He loves you, and that He has the best for you.
That takes something different.
It takes commitment, so that when you face the issues of life, you don’t get stuck in the moment, but you can turn to the God who created the universe and everything in it, the God who sits high on His throne but loves us dearly, sent His Son that he would die for us and reconcile us back to Him.
That is the God that we all desire to know intimately, to love, to trust. In this cornerstone scripture in Ephesians 2:4–7, it says that we were dead in sins, meaning we might know of God, but we are not intimate with Him when we’re dead in sins. When we’re dead in sin, we are essentially walking in the earth, but we have no life, no breath, no Holy Spirit, and no Jesus.
Can you imagine walking around in the physical, but in the Spirit being dead, being stagnant, feeling as if there is no reason to live? This is what happens when you are dead inside, when there is no Spirit, no life, no love, no grace, and no joy. But we have this treasure that God has placed in us as earthen vessels, that we have the ability to give God back what He gave us: life, joy, exultation.
We’re able to exalt the Lord. We’re able to lift Him up, to worship Him, to lift up our hands, and to let the King of Glory in. We have this capacity; He has given it to us. So we are quickened together with Christ. It is by the grace of Christ, of Jesus, that we are saved. And it says in verse 6:
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” - Ephesians 2:6 KJV
That sitting together, that being raised up in Christ, having the spirit of revival in our hearts and resurrection in our lives, this is made possible by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
And us walking with Jesus allows us to experience this, to take hold of this scriptural promise and to walk in the things of God, to receive His great mercy, and to walk in love with Him. That despite what’s happening in our lives, we can turn to God and we can say,
“But God, you are God in the midst.
You are the King of the overflow.
You are the I AM that I AM.”
We can turn to God and we can trust in Him.
We can lift him up above the circumstances and above the noise. We can rest in Him. We can trust in Him. We can sit in fellowship with Him. We can open the door of our heart, as it is referenced in Revelation 3:20–21. We can open the door to the Lord, and we can fellowship with him.
We can let Him into our hearts. We can know Him intimately. To fellowship, to break bread in essence with the King of the universe, is to be in a deep relationship, to trust in Him, and to know that He is available to us. That we might not have walked the earth with Jesus, but Jesus is the Living Word, the great I AM, and He is here with us even now.
But God! You are not alone. But God, it may seem like it is a dead thing, but the Lord has the tendency to turn things around, to turn the tables, to pour out His Spirit, to bring the dead things alive again in Christ Jesus. This is what He does. This is who He is. This is the power of His sacrifice.
It is here that we can take hold of that grace and receive by faith that we are walking with the King of Kings, that we are partaking in the glory that is to come, and that we are walking with Him, raised up in heavenly places with Him, because we can receive by faith that it is done for us.
And that despite what’s happening in the world, but God, we are here, and we are not alone.
Closing Devotional Prayer
My prayer for you:
Father, in the name of Jesus, thank you. Thank you, Lord God, for being God in the midst. Thank you for your great love. You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Thank you, Lord, for shifting everything. Thank you that every weight is coming down and that we can trust in you, for you are our strong tower. You are our great God.
And we can trust that you are here, loving us, lifting us, and bringing us into dominion, bringing us into authority, placing our feet on solid ground. For as it says in 1 Peter 5:10, that after we have suffered for a little while, that you yourself, O God, will establish us. That you, God, will strengthen us, that you will place our feet, God, on solid ground. I thank you, Lord, and I pray in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
