When the Bible tells us to give a sacrifice of praise, there’s a reason for that. The term “a sacrifice of praise” tells us that everything in a situation isn’t right. There are some things that are very wrong and some things that are truly heavy. But in times of suffering and pain, we can still bless His holy name. We can still lift up the name of the Lord. We can still worship Him for who he is.
This is what Paul and Silas did. In scripture, they are being tucked away and called to account for delivering a woman of the spirit of divination. As you read earlier in the chapter, you see that she was constantly pursuing them, yelling, “These are men of God, these are men of God”. So the spirit in her discerned that Paul and Silas were followers of Christ.
She did it repeatedly while he prayed and preached the gospel, but she did it repeatedly to the detriment of Paul, who turned around and said to the spirit to leave the woman. And straight away the spirit leaves the woman. So now there can be no more financial through that spirit inside of her.
They’re thrown in prison as a result. And as they’re thrown in prison there, the guard of the prison is given charge to keep them, to keep them deep, to keep them secure. But as Paul and Silas prayed and began to worship the Lord in the midnight hour, something changed. Something was moved in the spirit.
The praying and the worshiping, the praying and the singing before the Lord, was a combination of faith and worship that shook the very foundations of the prison. The Lord shook the prison, and in the shaking, every single prison door stood open, and every single shackle on those who were in prison fell away. And still no one moved out of their jail cells. There was no escape. They remained still.
