Today’s Devotional Scripture: 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. - Psalm 46:8-10 KJV

The world can get noisy. People are scared. Things are happening from one side of the earth to the other. Wars, pestilence, homelessness, fear, all of that is in the world. Yet and still, God is in the world too. His love, his grace, his glory is in the world. His peace is in this world as well.
This war between light and darkness, between the king of glory and the principalities and the dark forces, comes down to the faith of our souls, the faith in our hearts, and our faith in God. That is what is on the line.
Faith that He’s able to do what he said he would do.
Faith that it is worth walking with Jesus.
Faith that the trials and the circumstances don’t last always.
These are the things the enemy desires to undermine. These are the things that the enemy pursues when we’re growing with God, when we’re walking with God.
The undermining of your faith is the intention of the enemy. Doubt and fear rooted in our own understanding and our limits and our finite being, that is the goal of the enemy. To have us to react in a way where we soak up the noise, where we’re constantly on the defense, where we’re constantly in our flesh and stepping further and further away from God.
Psalm 46:8-10 provides the answer. It provides the Holy Spirit balm, the covering, the healing, the unearthing of our good God, our great God, who loves us and cares for us. It is here that the Lord admonishes us in Psalm 46:8-10 to be still, to look up and behold the works of God, to see what He has done in the earth.
To see the trembling and the shaking, to see the majesty of creation. He says, behold the works of the Lord. That’s step one in this passage of scripture. The second thing is that He has the power to cause the wars to cease. He has the power to break the weapons, to cut the spears, and to send forth his will and his word in the earth. To burn the chariots of fire.
So nothing is greater than God, even the wars that go forth in the earth and all the pain that they cause, all the losses in our hearts, all the losses of men, women, and children across the earth. God says yes, that is there, it is present, but God is greater and He’s able to carry us into a place of perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him.
The last thing it says is in the midst of the wars, in the midst of the great works of the Lord, be still and know that he is the Lord, he is our God. To be still and know is an intention; it’s a decision to stop everything, to look to the Lord, to be still in our hearts, to be calm, to be collected, to be assured that the Lord is with us.
Peace in the Storms
Jesus was able to sleep on a boat that was in the middle of a storm because he knew. He knew, and he trusted. So when they woke Jesus up and said, Lord, do you care that we’re, we’re going to die, do you care about our lives? Jesus admonishes them, and he goes forth to work a miracle. In Mark 4:38-40, it reads:
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? - Mark 4:38-40 KJV
In the midst of life storms, we can likewise have the mind of Christ that we are resting in the midst of it. We’re trusting in the midst of it. We are sitting in the presence of the Lord and waiting with bated breath for His glory to be revealed. We are followers of Jesus Christ.
So our calm, our peace, our joy in the midst of life storms, in the midst of wars, that is an expectation. Not because we have it all together, but because we know the one who does. We know the God who has power over the wind and the waves. We know that the Lord is with us, that he is keeping us full of glory and faith.
God is with us.
We can trust in this very thing, that he who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it until the time of Christ. So you’re here now. And maybe you’ve faced some issues of life lately, some severe storms that have caught you off guard. Remember that the storms obey God, the winds and the waves obey His glory.
And here and now, in this hour, we can rise above the noise, above the chaos, above the wars, above all the things in the earth, and we can look to our great God, beholding his wonder and majesty. Beholding the glory and grace of God in the very creation that we walk through every day.
We can be mindful of the earth that we’re standing on, the air that we’re breathing, and the sun that is shining this morning, and we can look to it with peace. We can look to it with joy, and we can look to it with faith, in Jesus’ name.
